This monumental building in Wassenaar from 1913 is surrounded by a landscaped garden with a pond, expansive terrace and hoards of Rhododendrons. Stately old trees lend historic allure to the garden. The lawn at the side of the house has a playground with equipment made out of natural materials. Garages and storage areas are so well landscaped and integrated that they are hidden from view.
Many original elements have been preserved throughout this stately home. The residents found it important to restore as much as possible, and to return the house to its original state. The impressive entrance hall with its marble floor and the classic staircase with its columns and beautiful stained glass windows are real eye catchers. The original tiles in the WC are in art deco style and have a floral motif that reappear in the windows.
A mix of classic and modern elements make up the living room. Bright parquet flooring in a herringbone pattern provides a quiet base. The L-shaped room boasts a large fireplace and two sitting areas, each with its own atmosphere. On the floor lie warm rugs, curtains on rods hang high in front of the windows, between the seating areas stand two large vases filled with branches. A contemporary chandelier is constructed around numerous candlesticks, a cascade of crystals falling to the center.
The kitchen flows onto a newly built conservator, which is bathed in a sea of light and unites the house with the garden. The large dining table is made out of a solid hardwood tree trunk. The kitchen itself is modern and sleek. The kitchen island, with sinks and its own bar has a beautiful white marble top with two chandeliers hanging from above that are identical to those in the living room.
On the first floor, the master bedroom leads into a generous closet and dressing area in a modern design. Adjacent is a bathroom whose floor and walls are lined with Calacatta Oro marble, which is incorporated in open book format. The veins in the white and grey marble have a bronze tone that is reflected in the mosaic tiles in the double rain shower and around the toilet and bidet. A long rectangular bathtub sits in the center of the room, with a view to the garden. This floor also includes a sitting room with a converted bay window lounge corer, four sofas that are covered in royal blue velvet and two silver upholstered armchairs.
The second floor comprises the bedrooms of the children. Each room is simple with functional furnishings and fresh colors. The sloping walls of the roof are furnished in wood and emit intimacy and coziness. The color of the tiles in the children’s bathroom coordinate well with the woodwork. Dormer windows on this floor provide extra space and ample daylight.
